Tribute to Iqbal Chagla: Celebrated Lawyer Passes Away at 85

Iqbal Chagla, a renowned Indian lawyer and former president of the Bombay Bar Association, passed away at 85. His legacy in law will live on forever.

Iqbal Chagla, one of India’s top lawyers, sadly passed away on Sunday in Mumbai at the age of 85. His family shared that he had been sick for a few days. Iqbal was known not only for his remarkable career but also as the son of former Chief Justice M C Chagla and the father of current Bombay High Court Judge R I Chagla.

He was born in 1939 and studied History and Law at Cambridge University. After completing his studies, he joined the Bombay Bar and became a Senior Advocate in the 1970s. He served as the President of the Bombay Bar Association for three terms between 1990 and 1999.

Although he was invited to become a Supreme Court judge, he chose to stay at the Bar, mainly working on civil and company law cases. The Bombay Bar Association expressed deep sadness over his passing, stating that his contributions to law will always be remembered and appreciated.

His last rites will be held on Monday at the Worli crematorium.
