A nun from Northern Ireland named Clare Crockett is one step closer to becoming a saint. Clare, who was 33 years old and from Londonderry, tragically died in an earthquake in Ecuador in April 2016 when the school building where she taught music collapsed.
Before becoming a nun, Clare was a well-known actress and even turned down a chance to work for Nickelodeon, a kids’ TV channel. Her friends were shocked when she decided to become a nun, especially because she made the announcement while holding a beer and a cigarette!
Clare took her vows with the Servant Sisters of the Home of the Mother order. She believed in living life fully and was part of stories about extraordinary miracles related to fertility.
The special ceremony to start Clare’s journey towards sainthood will happen in the Cathedral of Alcala de Henares in Madrid at 5:30 PM local time. This is the first step toward her being recognized as a saint. Over 100 people, including her family and friends, traveled to Madrid for this event, which will also be livestreamed for those in Derry. Clare’s sister, Shauna Gill, shared that their family feels very proud and excited.
During the ceremony, Clare will be called a “servant of God.” Shauna explained that there are four steps to become a saint, and this is just the beginning. They will look closely at Clare’s life before moving on, but no one knows how long that might take—maybe 10 years, 20 years, or even just two years.
About 1,000 people are expected at the ceremony, making it a big occasion for everyone involved.
