Akhilesh Yadav, the leader of the Samajwadi Party (SP) and a Member of Parliament, criticized the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government after an accident at the Kannauj railway station. A lintel, which is a support beam, collapsed while it was being built on Saturday, injuring many workers. Yadav said this accident is very sad and that safety measures were not followed during the construction.
He expressed concern for the workers, saying, “We hope all the laborers are okay. This incident shows negligence and corruption by the BJP.” He also mentioned that some contractors are pressured to cut costs, leading to poor-quality work and unsafe conditions.
The state government said they would help the victims and promised an investigation into what went wrong. Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya said they would take action against those responsible.
So far, about 28 workers have been rescued, and some are in the hospital. Six of them are seriously injured but safe. The local authorities used drones and rescue dogs to search for anyone still trapped under the debris. They announced that seriously injured workers would receive ₹50,000, while those with minor injuries would get ₹5,000.
Railway officials said the accident happened while a new building was under construction as part of a government plan to improve railway stations. The government is now focused on rescuing any remaining workers and investigating the cause of the collapse
