People in Bhubaneswar, India, suddenly started buying a lot of sindoor (vermilion) after the country carried out special strikes on terrorist camps in Pakistan, known as ‘Operation Sindoor.’
On Wednesday morning, many shops saw a big jump in customers buying sindoor, which is usually worn by married women. It became a way for people to celebrate and show pride in the military action.
In different neighborhoods, people gathered with Indian flags and sindoor as a way to honor the armed forces. Abhisek Tripathy, a college student, expressed pride in this moment, saying, “Even though sindoor is normally for women, we put it on our clothes and faces to celebrate our soldiers.”
A shop owner named Akhaya Das said he had only 40 small packets of sindoor left. When a customer bought them all, he learned it was for Operation Sindoor. Another shop owner, Prahalada Swain, usually sells about 10 or 15 packets a day, but on Wednesday, he sold over 45 packets!
People across the city showed their support by putting sindoor marks on their foreheads. Sujit Mahapatra, a local resident, said, “This is our small way of standing with them. Sindoor also reminds us of the blood and sacrifice of our soldiers.”
Cultural expert Pradyumna Khatua shared that this reaction was a natural feeling for the people. “In our culture, sindoor means victory and strength. People want to express their feelings during this important time.”
Retired police officer Santosh Nayak said that support from the public boosts the spirits of the armed forces, reminding them that the whole country stands behind them.
