Praveen Sood’s Tenure as CBI Director Extended for One More Year

The Indian government has decided to extend the job of Praveen Sood, the Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), for one more year. He first took this role on May 25, 2023, for a two-year period. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved his extension based on advice from a selection committee. This means Praveen Sood will continue leading the CBI until May 24, 2026.

Praveen Sood is an Indian Police Service (IPS) officer from the Karnataka state, and he started his career in 1986. Before becoming the CBI director, he was the Director General of Police in Karnataka.

He studied Civil Engineering at IIT Delhi and completed a Master’s degree in Public Policy & Management from IIM Bengaluru and the Maxwell School of Governance in New York.

Praveen Sood has received several awards for his excellent service, including the President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service in 2011, the Police Medal for Meritorious Service in 2002, and the Chief Minister’s Gold Medal in 1996. He was also recognized for his innovative use of technology in traffic management with the National e-Governance Gold Award in 2011 and received a special international award for road safety in 2006.
