Kohima: Naga Political Groups, tribal leaders, and the Forum for Naga Reconciliation recently came together to strengthen unity among the Nagas. They met for two days on May 5 and 6 to make sure everyone has a voice in the Naga political process. Participants agreed that no political or community group should be left out. They stated, “We want to include everyone, and we call on all groups and organizations to join us.”
The meeting highlighted the importance of working together. They encouraged people who haven’t participated to think about the need for unity. The gathering also mentioned that those who choose to ignore this call risk being left out of a better future.
One important decision made during the meeting is to hold a Day of Prayer on May 18. Tribal leaders will ask church groups to dedicate this day to pray for the Naga people’s political situation. They made it clear that all Nagas should focus on their shared rights and work together with kindness and understanding.
Supported by tribal councils, the gathering announced that all Naga Political Groups should unite under a common identity, avoiding any one group trying to dominate another. They stated, “We should not exclude ourselves from each other. Coming together is our path to freedom.”
The Indian government and the NSCN-IM group started talks to solve longstanding issues back in 1997. After many discussions, an agreement was made in 2015, but the government has not accepted NSCN-IM’s requests for a separate flag and constitution. The government has also been negotiating with another group known as the WC NNPGs since 2017. While WC NNPGs are open to negotiation, NSCN-IM insists that without a separate flag and constitution, they will not accept any solution. The Forum for Naga Reconciliation has been working hard since 2008 to bring peace between the different Naga factions and recently has initiated efforts to unite them for the common good.
