Former President Donald Trump has announced a plan to reopen Alcatraz, the famous prison on an island near San Francisco. He believes this will help deal with crime, especially from illegal immigrants. Trump shared his thoughts on Truth Social, saying that America has problems with violent criminals who only bring trouble.
He believes past leaders were not tough enough on crime and says that keeping dangerous criminals away from people is the right thing to do. Trump wants to use the reopened Alcatraz to hold the most dangerous offenders and sees it as a symbol of law and order.
Alcatraz was closed in 1963 because it cost too much to maintain. It used to hold 336 prisoners and now serves as a popular tourist spot. It’s run by the National Parks Service and is a historic landmark.
The famous criminals Al Capone and others were once kept there, and many inmates tried to escape. A well-known movie called “Escape from Alcatraz” tells the story of three inmates who tried to get away.
Nancy Pelosi, a former House Speaker from California, dismissed Trump’s idea as not serious, mentioning that Alcatraz has been closed for over sixty years. Instead, it is now a national park that many people visit.
In the past, Trump has suggested sending dangerous criminals to other countries and even reopening a detention center at Guantanamo Bay for many criminals he calls “worst criminal aliens.”
