AB de Villiers, a legend from Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), defended his teammate Virat Kohli against critics. This happened after Kohli played a strong inning, scoring 62 runs in a match against Chennai Super Kings, helping RCB win by just two runs. With this victory, RCB has a good chance of reaching the playoffs in IPL 2025.
Last year, Kohli faced a lot of criticism for his batting speed in T20 games. Former Indian cricketers Virender Sehwag and Sunil Gavaskar pointed out that Kohli’s scoring rate needed to improve, especially when he reached half-centuries. Sehwag even said Kohli took more time to score his century compared to other players.
In response to these past criticisms, De Villiers shared comments from Gavaskar and Sehwag on his Instagram. He reminded everyone how important Kohli is to RCB. “Virat is always there for us. When he bats, there’s nothing to worry about,” De Villiers said. He praised Kohli for a great performance and told critics to remember how well he played.
Kohli has been impressive in IPL 2025, scoring over 500 runs for the eighth time in his career. His recent 62-run inning brought his total to 505 runs in just 11 matches, with a strike rate of 143.47. He has also hit seven fifty-plus scores this season. Currently, Kohli is leading the race for the Orange Cap, with close competition from Sai Sudharsan of the Gujarat Titans.
RCB has performed well this season, winning eight out of 11 games so far, and they are close to making the playoffs.
