Kota’s Disturbing Trend: Student Suicides and NEET Exam Pressures

Every year, there are reports of students in Kota, Rajasthan, taking their own lives. Kota is known as the “coaching capital of India” because many students come here for extra classes to prepare for big exams. So far this year, 14 cases of suicide have been reported in Kota. Last year, there were 17 cases, and in 2023, the number was 26.

Recently, a girl under 18 years old, who was preparing for the NEET exam, tragically took her own life. She lived in Kota with her parents and came from Sheopur in Madhya Pradesh. The girl was found in her room, and there was no letter left to explain why she did it. Her body is being checked by doctors to find out more.

In another incident, a 23-year-old student from Delhi told his parents he wouldn’t take the NEET exam this year. Sadly, three days later, he was found dead near a railway track. He had a conversation with his sister before that, saying he needed more time to prepare.

Before these cases, on April 22, an 18-year-old NEET student took his life too. He left a note saying that his family and his studies were not the reason for his decision.

The NEET exam, happening on May 4, is very important because it’s for students who want to get into medical schools. Last year, there were problems with the exam, including accusations of cheating and unfair grading, which led to many protests. To ensure everything goes smoothly this year, there will be extra security all around.
