Patna: Prime Minister Narendra Modi said on Sunday that sports can help make India more influential in the world. He announced that the government is investing a lot of money to improve sports facilities in India, with a goal of hosting the 2036 Olympic Games. Modi shared these thoughts during the online opening of the Khelo India Youth Games in Bihar.
He said that sports are becoming an important part of culture in Bihar. The Khelo India Games, which will take place from May 4 to May 15, 2023, will be held in five cities across Bihar, with some events also in New Delhi. Modi mentioned that India is working hard to host the Olympics for the first time. Other countries, like Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and South Korea, are also interested in hosting the 2036 Games.
Right now, India’s sports budget is around Rs. 4,000 crores, which is more than three times what it was ten years ago. A large part of this money is being used to build sports facilities. There are more than 1,000 Khelo India centers across India, with many located in Bihar.
Modi explained that sports are now a career option for many young people, providing job opportunities in areas like physiotherapy, data analysis, sports technology, and sports management. He encouraged athletes to compete hard and enjoy their experience at the Games.
Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya stated that PM Modi wants India to be a developed nation by 2047 and aims for India to be one of the top five countries in the world. The Khelo India Youth Games will include over 6,000 athletes from all over the country competing for 284 gold medals in various sports. The main event will take place at the Patliputra Sports Complex in Bihar. Swimming will have the most gold medals up for grabs, followed by athletics and wrestling.
Bihar will have around 450 athletes taking part, while states like Maharashtra and Haryana are also sending large teams to compete.
