India recently decided to hold back water from two important dams that supply water to Pakistan. This action is part of India’s response to a terrible attack in Pahalgam, Kashmir, where 26 people lost their lives. Most of the victims were tourists.
Following the attack on April 22, India made several choices to show its anger towards Pakistan. These included lowering diplomatic ties, banning Pakistani ships from its ports, and stopping imports from Pakistan.
Pakistan strongly protested India’s decision to hold back water, claiming that stopping water would be like declaring war. India controls the flow of water from the Baglihar Dam on the Chenab River and plans to control water from the Kishanganga Dam on the Jhelum River next. These rivers are essential for Pakistan as they provide water for farming and drinking.
The Baglihar Dam has caused ongoing disagreements between India and Pakistan, with Pakistan even seeking help from the World Bank in the past. The Kishanganga Dam is also under scrutiny for how it affects another river that flows into Pakistan.
Due to India’s strong actions, Pakistan feels worried and fears that a military strike might happen soon. Prime Minister Narendra Modi vowed to hunt down those responsible for the attack.
Amid the rising tensions, Pakistan has been breaking the ceasefire agreement along the border for ten straight nights, and the Indian Army is responding in kind. Bilawal Bhutto, a former Pakistani minister, warned India that stopping water flow would lead to bloodshed.
