Baba Sivanand, a respected spiritual leader and yoga teacher, passed away in Varanasi due to health issues. His followers believe he was 128 years old. He had been in BHU Hospital since April 30 and died Saturday night. His body is at his home in Kabirnagar Colony for people to say their goodbyes, and his last rites will take place later today.
Baba Sivanand was born on August 8, 1896, in the Sylhet district of what is now Bangladesh. He faced many challenges in his early life, losing his parents to hunger when he was just six. Afterward, he lived with his guardian, Omkarnand, who guided him on a path of spirituality.
He is well-known for his work in yoga and spirituality and was honored with the Padma Shri award in 2022 for his contributions. His followers say his long life and good health came from his strict lifestyle. He woke up at 3 am, practiced yoga every day, ate simply, and managed his daily tasks by himself.
Yogi Adityanath, the Chief Minister, expressed his sorrow over Baba Sivanand’s passing. He praised Baba’s dedication to yoga, calling it an inspiration for everyone. He prayed for Baba’s soul and for strength for his followers in this difficult time. “Om Shanti!” he added.
