The White House wants to make big changes at the CIA and other intelligence agencies, like the NSA. Officials from the Trump administration told Congress about these plans.
They plan to reduce the CIA workforce by 1,200 workers over the next few years. Many of these cuts will come from employees who have already chosen to retire early. The rest will happen by hiring fewer new people, so there won’t likely be many layoffs.
In a statement, the CIA said that Director John Ratcliffe is trying to get the agency in line with Trump’s security goals. They want to bring in new energy, give chances to young leaders, and better prepare the CIA for its important job.
The CIA and NSA have already suggested that some workers can resign voluntarily. The CIA is also planning to let go of some employees who were hired recently.
The new administration has also removed diversity, equity, and inclusion programs at these agencies. However, a judge has stopped efforts to fire 19 employees from these programs, who are challenging their terminations.
Trump recently fired the general who was in charge of the NSA and Cyber Command. Ratcliffe has promised to change the CIA and wants the agency to focus more on gathering intelligence from human sources and pay more attention to China.
