President Donald Trump talked on Friday about the U.S. economy, saying it is going through a change but will be fantastic in the future. When NBC News asked him if a short-term recession (a period when the economy isn’t doing well) would be okay, Trump confidently said, “Yes, everything’s okay. We are in a transition period, and I think we will do great.”
Earlier on Friday, Trump also posted on Truth Social, mentioning strong job numbers and asking the U.S. Federal Reserve to lower interest rates. He said, “We’re just getting started!”
These comments came after a report that showed job growth in April slowed down a bit. Trump, who recently marked 100 days in office, is facing criticism over how he’s handling the economy. Many experts think the tariffs he’s put in place could make prices go up and slow down growth.
A Reuters/Ipsos poll from Sunday revealed that 42% of people approve of Trump’s job as president, which is a drop of five points since his inauguration on January 20.
Just this Wednesday, the U.S. Commerce Department shared the first sign of economic decline in three years, as businesses rushed to import goods before Trump’s tariffs kicked in. However, some experts believe strong spending by consumers and smart business investments could help the growth recover soon.
