On April 24, the Texas Education Agency (TEA) shared the ‘A to F’ ratings for all public schools and districts in Texas. These ratings come from the 2023 survey but are being released now after a long court battle. Many school districts sued the TEA because they felt the standards for grading were unfairly changed.
How to Check the Ratings:
If you want to see your school’s or district’s grade, follow these steps:
1. Go to the TEA website’s accountability page at https://tea.texas.gov/texas-schools/accountability/academic-accountability/performance-reporting/2023-accountability-rating-system-0.
2. Click on “Search accountability reports.”
3. At 8:30 AM, when the reports for 2022-2023 are available, use the dropdowns to find your district or school.
4. Once you find your school or district, click “view reports” to see the overall letter grade.
You can also check grades on the state’s TXschools.gov website.
About the Ratings:
Schools and districts didn’t receive ratings in 2020 or 2021 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2022, Texas lawmakers allowed schools with low ratings not to release scores to help them recover. Recently, the TEA changed the grading system, causing more than 120 districts to file lawsuits claiming the changes were unfair.
For example, to get an ‘A’ rating, high schools now need 88% of seniors to enroll in college, join a career, or enter the military. This is higher than the old requirement of 60%.
Each year, the TEA gives schools and districts letter grades from ‘A’ to ‘F’ based on test results, how much students grow academically, graduation rates, and readiness for college, careers, or military service. The ratings also depend on the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) test, which checks if students understand the core subjects they study in school.
