Investigating the Tragic Death of a Nepalese Student at KIIT

Bhubaneswar: The Odisha police are looking into the death of an 18-year-old student from Nepal who was studying at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT). She was found dead in her hostel room, and it is suspected that she may have taken her own life. The reasons for her death are still unclear.

The girl was studying computer science and came from Birgunj, Nepal. The Odisha government has expressed deep sympathy to her family and is supporting them during this tough time. A police official said they will check her chats and messages on her phone and laptop as part of their investigation.

Her father, who came to KIIT to collect her body, stated he last spoke to his daughter around 3 PM, and she seemed okay. He received the sad news of her death at 8 PM.

The Nepal government is also involved and is working with Indian officials to make sure everything is thoroughly investigated. This incident is particularly concerning as it’s the second case of a Nepali student found dead in just a few months.

In a previous case, another 20-year-old Nepali student took her own life after facing blackmail and mistreatment. Following the investigation into that case, the university faced severe criticism for how they handled the situation, leading to interventions from the Indian government.

Now, the National Human Rights Commission is looking into this latest incident. They have instructed local officials to investigate and provide a report by May 9. Additionally, the University Grants Commission has set up a committee to examine ways to improve student safety and support at KIIT.
