Farooq Abdullah Calls for Fair Water Sharing in Jammu and Kashmir

Farooq Abdullah, the leader of Jammu and Kashmir National Conference, recently talked about India’s choice to pause the Indus Waters Treaty with Pakistan. He mentioned that while India has warned Pakistan about stopping water supply, it doesn’t want to hurt anyone. Abdullah stressed that India is “not as cruel” as Pakistan, implying that India would never harm people just for water reasons.

He noted that when the Indus Waters Treaty was made, the voices of the Jammu and Kashmir residents were not heard. According to him, this treaty has harmed the people of Jammu and Kashmir the most. He urged the Indian government to find ways to better share water with the people of Jammu.

After a recent attack in Pahalgam that tragically killed 26 people, Abdullah reassured tourists that they should not be afraid. He declared that Kashmir will always be a part of India and that the people of Kashmir desire peace and progress. He emphasized the need to end terrorism, saying, “We want to move forward and become a superpower one day.”

Abdullah also dismissed comments made by former Pakistan foreign minister Bilawal Bhutto, stating that such remarks should not hold back progress. He believes that the Indus Waters Treaty should be looked at again because the people of Jammu and Kashmir deserve better.
