TUSCALOOSA, Alabama – On Thursday, President Donald Trump visited the University of Alabama to kick off graduation weekend. He spoke to many graduates, saying, “Congratulations to the class of 2025! Roll Tide!” “Roll Tide” is a saying that shows pride for the school’s famous football team.
Trump picked this university in strongly Republican Alabama to share his views because he often talks against elite colleges in Democratic states. During his speech, he celebrated the school and its students, shared advice from his life, and talked about his efforts to stop illegal immigration and transgender athletes in college sports. “Men should not play in women’s sports,” he said, receiving loud applause from the crowd.
This event took place after Trump faced issues with the economy due to his trade wars and recently dismissed his national security adviser, Mike Waltz. Trump told the graduates to always do their best, work hard, and think big.
Nick Saban, the famous former football coach who won six championships at the university, introduced Trump and joked, “I feel like I am the warm-up band for the Rolling Stones.”
Although the White House called Trump’s appearance a commencement speech, it was more of a special event before the beginning of official graduation ceremonies. Graduates could choose to attend but did not have to.
Some students protested Trump’s visit. The College Democrats organized a counter-rally away from the university, which attracted over 500 people. Notable speakers included former presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke and Doug Jones, the last Democrat in Alabama’s statewide office. “I can’t just sit around while President Trump destroys the country,” said student Allison Schorr, 20.
