The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) had a tough time this IPL season, making many unwanted records, like their first loss to Royal Challengers Bengaluru at their home ground, Chepauk, since 2008. They also faced a sad five-match losing streak at home. Coach Stephen Fleming believes in using experienced players and a careful approach, but CSK did not make it to the playoffs for the second time in three years. This has led many to question how the team picks players.
A report by The Indian Express said that CSK ignored advice from their own scouts. The scouts had found some young talents that could have helped the team but were overlooked. Priyansh Arya, for example, has been a standout player for the Punjab Kings, scoring 346 runs in just 10 matches, with an impressive strike rate of 196.59. He even scored the third-fastest IPL century by an Indian this season. CSK scouts had suggested him, but the team management (including the coach and captain) chose not to pick him.
Other teams have successfully found and used new talents from domestic T20 leagues, while CSK seems less open to this idea. In the past, players like Varun Chakaravarthy and Sai Sudharsan, who are now doing well for other teams, were also not picked by CSK despite being recommended.
While CSK has bounced back from weak seasons before, their struggles this year have raised serious questions about who they keep and how they pick players at auctions. People are especially curious about the decision to keep Ravindra Jadeja for ₹18 crore and Shivam Dube for ₹12 crore, especially when compared to the salaries of other top Indian players. The team has also spent a lot on experienced bowlers like Ashwin (₹9.75 crore) and Noor Ahmad (₹10 crore), which has limited their ability to go after big-name batters. Because of this, they missed out on players like KL Rahul, Liam Livingstone, and Glenn Maxwell and had to settle for lesser-known players instead.
