In New Delhi, Sujata Chaturvedi, the former sports secretary, has officially joined the Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) as its new member. She took her oath of office on Thursday, led by Lt Gen Raj Shukla, who is the most senior member of the UPSC.
The UPSC is in charge of picking leaders for important government roles, like the Indian Administrative Service, Indian Foreign Service, and Indian Police Service. Members of the UPSC serve for six years or until they turn 65 years old. With Sujata’s appointment, there are still three open spots for new members. The chairperson, Preeti Sudan, finished her term on Tuesday.
Sujata Chaturvedi is a 1989-batch IAS officer who worked in the Bihar cadre. She has over three decades of experience in administration. Within Bihar, she held several important positions, including principal secretary in the finance department and vice-chairman of urban development.
In her role at the central government, she worked as secretary for youth affairs and sports and contributed significantly to sports development in India. Some of her big achievements include organizing the Khelo India Games, hosting the FIDE Chess Olympiad, and pushing for new sports laws to combat doping.
Originally from Maharashtra, Sujata speaks Hindi, English, Urdu, Russian, and Marathi fluently. She holds a degree in English, a post-graduate degree in history from Nagpur University, and an MPhil in public administration along with a diploma in the Russian language.
