Dr. Shriram Nene, who is married to the famous Bollywood actress Madhuri Dixit, was born in London but grew up in the United States. He made a big decision to leave his successful medical career in the U.S. and move to India with Madhuri and their two kids, Arin and Ryan. This choice was not welcomed by his parents. Dr. Nene has talked about how his parents had strong ideas about what he should do for a living. Since they came from an immigrant background, they insisted he become either a doctor or an engineer; they wouldn’t help him pay for anything else he wanted to study.
Even though he was entrepreneurial and started a software business when he was just 14, he felt he had to listen to his parents. They told him, “Choose medicine or engineering, or we won’t pay for your schooling.” He thought they didn’t know there were other good options because of their immigrant experience. To make his parents happy, he didn’t take offers from top colleges like Stanford and UC Berkeley and instead chose a program at Washington University that combined college and medical school. He later trained in surgery at UCLA and specialized in heart surgery at the University of Florida.
Dr. Nene found his work in surgery to be very meaningful. He worked with a great team of around 80 people, and many times, they had to act fast to save lives. He said that just being on time made a huge difference, and sometimes they could help patients who were very close to dying. He compared teamwork in the operating room to a sports team that works well together.
In another video on his YouTube channel, Dr. Nene talked about moving to India in 2011. He loved his Indian roots, but his parents did not support his move. They thought he left a great job as a heart surgeon in the U.S. He could have done many heart surgeries every year, but he wanted to make a bigger impact than just working in the operating room.
