Raipur, Chhattisgarh – Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai said some victims of Maoist violence from the Bastar region met him on Thursday. They asked him to keep the ongoing anti-Naxal operation going along the Chhattisgarh-Telangana border. This operation, called ‘Mission Sankalp’, has been happening for 11 days and is very large, with about 24,000 security personnel involved.
Many activists and political groups in Telangana want the operation to stop. However, the victims, including people who have lost their vision or limbs due to Naxal violence, asked the Chief Minister to continue the operation. They believe that some people, from local areas to as far as Delhi, are trying to halt it without understanding how much they have suffered.
The anti-Naxal operation is taking place on the Karregutta hills, an area known to be a hideout for Maoists. Since the operation started on April 21, security forces are tracking down these groups in a challenging forest stretched over an area of about 800 square kilometers.
A video of security personnel waving the Indian flag at the top of one of the hills has gone viral, suggesting that some progress has been made. However, a senior official mentioned that the operation is not yet complete and more work needs to be done.
The goal is not only to reduce the number of Naxals but also to make the area safe for local people again. The operation is aimed at breaking the hold of the Maoist groups in this region.
Recently, three women Naxalites were killed, and a lot of weapons were found by the security forces. Former Telangana Chief Minister K. Chandrasekhar Rao asked the central government to stop the operation because he believes it is harming local tribes and youth. On the same day, some intellectuals urged Telangana’s current Chief Minister A. Revanth Reddy to work towards a ceasefire and start peace talks with the Naxalites.
