The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) said on Thursday that the government’s choice to count castes in the upcoming census is a smart move. This decision shows that the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) wants to help people who are less fortunate and deserve support.
Union minister Dharmendra Pradhan explained that counting castes will promote fairness and provide help to the needy. He criticized the Congress party for trying to take credit for this decision and asked why the last caste count happened in 1931, long before India became independent. He reminded everyone that the Congress party was in control then.
Pradhan further pointed out that if important leaders like B.R. Ambedkar and Mahatma Gandhi hadn’t advocated for it, the country wouldn’t have caste-based reservations. He accused the Congress of ignoring Ambedkar when deciding who should get the Bharat Ratna, the highest civilian award, and delaying important reports that could help provide reservations for various groups.
He mentioned that even former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi did not support reservations for the Other Backward Classes (OBC). He said people in the Congress party only care about helping their own families, not the weaker sections of society.
When RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav remarked that this decision is a blow to those who claim the opposition promotes caste division, Pradhan responded that some people are too focused on their own families to be giving advice. A response from the Congress party is still awaited.
