Air Marshal Narmdeshwar Tiwari, who is currently in charge of the South Western Air Command, will become the new Vice Chief of the Air Staff on May 2. He is taking over from Air Marshal S P Dharkar, who retired on April 30. On his last day, Air Marshal Dharkar received a guard of honor at the Air Headquarters, known as Vayu Bhawan, and paid tribute to fallen heroes at the National War Memorial.
Air Marshal Dharkar had been Vice Chief of the Air Staff since October 2024 and succeeded Air Chief Marshal A P Singh, who is now the Chief of the Indian Air Force.
Air Marshal Tiwari started as the AOC-in-C of South Western Air Command in Gandhinagar in May 2023. He became an officer in the fighter stream in June 1986 and graduated from the National Defence Academy as the top student. He has experience flying different types of planes and is both a qualified flight instructor and an experimental test pilot.
With extensive experience, Air Marshal Tiwari has worked on testing various weapons and systems, mainly on the Mirage-2000 aircraft. He participated in key operations, including missions during the Kargil conflict.
