Adam Johnson’s Fatal Accident: No Charges Filed After Investigation

A man who was once arrested after the sad death of ice hockey player Adam Johnson will not face any charges. Adam, who played for the Nottingham Panthers, tragically passed away when his neck was accidentally cut during a game against the Sheffield Steelers on October 28, 2023. The Nottingham Panthers called the incident a “freak accident.”

Two weeks later, a man was arrested, but his name wasn’t given to the public. However, Matt Petgrave, the Sheffield Steelers player involved in the collision, shared on a crowdfunding page that he was being investigated.

South Yorkshire Police announced that the man arrested has been released without any charges. They explained, “A man who was held under suspicion of manslaughter after Adam Johnson’s death has been released, as the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) decided not to press any charges.” Initially, Adam suffered a serious neck injury, which was confirmed by a post-mortem examination.

After conducting many inquiries, including reviewing video footage and consulting experts, the police submitted a report to the CPS in May 2024. After thoroughly examining everything, the CPS decided there was no reasonable chance of convicting anyone, stating it was a “shocking and deeply upsetting incident.”

Matt Petgrave later spoke out to ask for help paying for his legal costs, even though he was not officially named as a suspect. He shared, “On October 28, 2023, I was involved in a tragic accident that led to the death of Adam Johnson. The legal process has been long and tough.” He added that his insurance coverage had stopped, making it hard for him to pay for legal help, especially since his UK Visa expired, which stopped him from working as a professional player.

Detective Chief Inspector Benjamin Wood said, “Adam Johnson’s death has deeply affected many people, from local Sheffield residents to ice hockey fans around the world.” He emphasized the extensive work done to investigate the accident and reiterated their sympathies for Adam’s family and friends.
