Putin’s Ceasefire in Ukraine: Real Hope or Just a Deception

Russia recently attacked parts of Ukraine during the night, causing harm to civilians. In a tragic event, a 12-year-old girl lost her life, and three others were hurt, including a six-year-old. Authorities reported that Russia used drones and bombs in attacks on places like Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city.

Russian President Vladimir Putin declared a 72-hour ceasefire that will begin on May 8 to honor “Victory Day,” a day that celebrates Russia’s triumph over Nazi Germany in 1945. However, Ukrainian officials think this ceasefire is just a trick to mislead the United States.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy stated that Russia has been rejecting a proposal from the U.S. for a full 30-day stop to the fighting while agreeing to it. Zelenskyy wants assurance that U.S. military support will continue, especially since there are concerns about Europe being unable to help if the U.S. pulls back.

U.S. President Donald Trump has shown interest in ending the conflict but is doubtful of Putin’s intentions while attacks continue. Ukrainian officials have mocked Putin’s ceasefire announcement, with Andrii Yermak, a top advisor, saying Russia is still trying to break through Ukrainian defenses and attacking civilians.

Zelenskyy demands an immediate and unconditional ceasefire for at least 30 days to ensure safety. In response, Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov accused Ukraine of not responding properly to Putin’s offer.

Experts believe Putin wishes to avoid any embarrassing attacks during Victory Day celebrations and is trying to gain advantages from negotiations with Ukraine and the U.S.
