Naresh Tikait Criticizes India’s Decision on Indus Water Treaty

Farmer leader Naresh Tikait is unhappy with India’s choice to end the Indus Water Treaty, saying it was a bad decision. He stated, “This treaty should have continued. We farmers need water.” His comments come after the Indian government decided to break the treaty in response to a tragic terror attack in Pahalgam, where 26 people, mostly tourists, were killed. This decision created a lot of controversy.

Many leaders, including members of the ruling BJP party, have criticized Tikait for his remarks. Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan said some people oppose the government too much and are now against the country. He added that India should not give water to those who harm innocent people.

Rajkumar Chahar, President of BJP Kisan Morcha, claimed Tikait was speaking like someone from Pakistan and asked him to apologize. He remarked, “Our Prime Minister has taken strong steps, including stopping the water to Pakistan. Tikait should be ashamed and apologize to the nation.”

Union Minister Ramdas Athawale also disagreed with Tikait, suggesting he should support the nation instead of opposing government decisions after such a tragic event.

In response to the backlash, Rakesh Tikait, Naresh’s brother, clarified that they support the country’s choice. He said they are with the government and the armed forces, stressing that strict actions should be taken.

The Indian government decided to stop the Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan after the deadly terror attack on April 22, which was one of the worst attacks on civilians in Kashmir in recent years. Besides ending the treaty, the government also told Pakistani nationals in India to return to their home country.
