Nagaland Students Plan Protests Over Job Regularization Issues

Kohima – The Nagaland government decided to shorten the time for a special group to give advice on making the jobs of 147 assistant professors permanent. Because of this decision, groups of students are planning to protest starting April 29.

On Monday, the government held three meetings, including one with the Naga Students’ Federation and two other groups. After these meetings, Deputy Chief Minister T R Zeliang announced that they discussed the demand to cancel the order made on April 21 and to pause the committee that was set up to look into this issue.

Zeliang explained that the committee, initially given eight weeks to submit their report, will now finish in just four weeks. He mentioned that the government is serious about resolving the issue and urged the student groups to stop their protests.

Before this meeting, the cabinet had decided in June 2016 that there would be no more contracts or permanent jobs for teachers hired after that. When asked why the government recently agreed to make the jobs of these 147 professors permanent, Zeliang admitted that there was a mistake made by the department, and they needed to find out what happened.

He stated that the committee would investigate and take action against anyone who messed up. However, leaders from the student groups said they wouldn’t accept the government’s new plan and will still protest outside the Directorate of Higher Education next Tuesday morning. The Naga Students’ Federation also said that they would begin their planned protests on April 29 since their seven-day deadline to the government has passed.
