New Delhi: Former Nepalese Prime Minister Baburam Bhattarai spoke on Monday about the strong and historic friendship between India and Nepal. He suggested that the prime ministers of both countries should meet to solve the issues they have. During his visit to India, Bhattarai met with Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and had a short discussion about important topics.
He explained that Nepal is facing political problems because it is still dealing with changes since a revolution made the country a democracy. Bhattarai believes that discussing problems, like border disputes including the Kalapani issue, is the best way to move forward. He mentioned the 1816 Treaty of Sugauli and the 1950 Treaty of Peace and Friendship to highlight the need for good talks between India and Nepal.
According to Bhattarai, a better relationship with India is crucial for Nepal’s progress. He said that many issues are left unresolved because of misunderstandings and that it is time for the leaders of both countries to meet and work together.
He remarked that India is becoming a strong regional power while Nepal is still developing. He emphasized the importance of dialogue to solve old problems from history.
Speaking about China-Nepal relations, he assured that Nepal would not be used against India. Bhattarai expressed a wish for better ties, saying they share cultural and social connections. He mentioned that both countries need to resolve misunderstandings and work together for prosperity.
Bhattarai also pointed out that Nepal needs investments from India in different sectors like tourism, industry, health, and IT. He noted that Nepal took time to move away from monarchy and establish democracy but is making progress.
He believes that the success of a political revolution should benefit the people through improvements in economy and governance. Bhattarai called for a directly elected president and a fully proportional parliament in Nepal to ensure better governance.
