India Takes Action After Pahalgam Terror Attack: Key Decisions Made

On Sunday, Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh met the Indian Army’s Chief, General Anil Chauhan, in Delhi. They talked about how India will respond to a recent terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir.

On April 22, terrorists attacked the Baisaran meadow near Pahalgam, killing 26 people, mostly tourists. This was one of the deadliest attacks since the awful Pulwama attack in 2019 that took the lives of 40 CRPF soldiers.

After the attack, police, CRPF, Army, and other security forces increased their search operations in the area to find those responsible for the violence. The National Investigation Agency (NIA) is also investigating and questioning people who saw what happened.

Cabinet Committee on Security Meeting

On April 23, Prime Minister Modi held a meeting with the Cabinet Committee on Security to discuss how India will respond to the Pahalgam attack.

During this meeting, they decided to pull back Indian defence and military advisors from the high commission in Islamabad because a Pakistani militant group claimed responsibility for the attack. The number of personnel at the high commission will also be reduced from 55 to just 30 starting May 1, 2025.

India has chosen to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty, a long-standing agreement about water sharing with Pakistan. This decision has made the already tense relationship between the two countries worse, with Pakistani authorities closing airspace to Indian airlines and other retaliatory actions.
