On Sunday, some masked attackers hurt Congress MP Pradyut Bordoloi and MLA Sibamoni Bora while they were on their way to a meeting about local elections in Nagaon district, Assam. The attack happened at Dumdumia New Market in Dhing. Bordoloi explained that they were returning from a different meeting when a group of men with rods surrounded their car and began to smash the windows. “I believe they knew it was my car,” he said. They had to duck under their seats to protect themselves during the attack.
An FIR has been filed about the incident. Bordoloi stated that as scary as these attacks are, they won’t stop their campaign against the BJP in the upcoming elections. “We won’t be afraid. We will keep fighting against corruption and bad behavior,” he added.
Congress leader Charan Singh Sapra shared on social media that CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s supporters were behind the attack. He said Assam is becoming like “Hitler’s rule,” and the Assam Police are just following orders. A group of senior Congress leaders plans to go to the police chief’s office to protest and give a formal complaint. The Congress party in Assam has also claimed that the state police is trying to scare its candidates before the elections.
Several important Congress leaders, including APCC president Bhupen Borah and MP Pradyut Bordoloi, marched to meet the Director General of Police to discuss the targeting of Congress candidates and their families.
