On Saturday, Congress leader Mallikarjun Kharge criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for not attending an important meeting about the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, which resulted in 26 deaths. Kharge pointed out that it was odd for the Prime Minister to miss such an urgent meeting while he was busy giving a speech in Bihar for the upcoming elections.
Kharge attended the all-party meeting along with other political leaders, including Rahul Gandhi, where they discussed the attack and admitted there were security oversights. Kharge expressed that it was important the Prime Minister be present to talk about what went wrong, such as any failures in security and intelligence.
During the meeting, Defense Minister Rajnath Singh acknowledged the security lapses during the Pahalgam attack. Kharge also talked to Home Minister Amit Shah about making sure such incidents do not happen again in the future. He insisted that the government should prepare better to protect its people. Although there were issues raised, Kharge said it wasn’t the right time to complain about the government’s decisions. He emphasized the need for unity in supporting the government now.
Finally, Kharge questioned the government’s recent decision to pause the 1960 Indus Water Treaty with Pakistan, asking where they would store the excess water and suggesting those issues could be discussed later.
