India Suspends Water Sharing with Pakistan After Terror Attack

India has decided to stop sharing water with Pakistan by suspending the Indus Waters Treaty. This decision comes after a tragic terror attack in Pahalgam, which resulted in the loss of 26 lives and increased tensions between the two countries.

CR Paatil, the Union Minister of Jal Shakti, stated that the Indian government wants to ensure that not even “a drop of water” goes to Pakistan. After a meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah, the government discussed three options to achieve this. They are working on short-term, medium-term, and long-term plans to stop the water flow to Pakistan.

Soon, the government plans to clean up rivers to help divert the water. They have started making technical and administrative plans to prevent water from flowing into Pakistan from the western rivers that are part of the 1960 treaty.

This treaty, which was helped by the World Bank, has lasted through many conflicts between India and Pakistan. It controls how six rivers from the Indus basin are shared. India has access to the eastern rivers (Ravi, Beas, Sutlej), while Pakistan has rights to the western rivers (Indus, Jhelum, Chenab), with some limited use allowed for India.
