Rahul Gandhi Cuts US Trip Short After Tragic Pahalgam Attack

Congress MP Rahul Gandhi returned to New Delhi early Thursday, cutting short his trip to the United States. He made this decision after a tragic terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which took the lives of at least 26 people, including tourists.

Rahul Gandhi will attend a meeting with Congress leaders at 10:30 am. Jairam Ramesh, the Congress General Secretary, shared this news on social media, confirming that Rahul is back to be part of this important discussion.

In response to the terror attack, the Indian government plans to hold an all-party meeting, set for April 24, which will be led by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh. The attack, which happened on Tuesday, targeted tourists and is one of the most deadly incidents in recent years.

After the attack, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman also had to cut their trips short. The government announced several tough measures against Pakistan, which is believed to support cross-border terrorism. They will pause the Indus Waters Treaty from 1960 and close the integrated checkpost at Attari.

Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri held a press conference to outline the government’s response and announced that Pakistani nationals would no longer be allowed to visit India under the SAARC visa exemption scheme.

During a Cabinet Committee on Security (CCS) meeting, which lasted over two hours, the attack was discussed, and strong condemnation was expressed. The CCS offered condolences to the families of the victims and highlighted the need to combat terrorism actively.

Meanwhile, the families of the victims mourned their losses, calling for the government to take serious action against those responsible. The last rites for Indian Navy Lieutenant Vinay Narwal, who died in the attack, were held in Karnal, while another victim, Manjunath Rao from Shivamogga, was also honored by his family.

This attack in Pahalgam is seen as one of the most significant since the 2019 Pulwama attack, which had previously shocked the nation.
