India has decided to pause the Indus Waters Treaty after a recent terrorist attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 people. This action has upset Pakistan, with a senior official calling it “water warfare” and a “cowardly, illegal move.”
The Indus Waters Treaty, which was created in 1960 with help from the World Bank, has been an important agreement between India and Pakistan for a long time. These two countries, both having nuclear weapons, have had a troubled history, and this treaty was one of the few things keeping peace between them.
Indian foreign secretary Vikram Misri announced that India would suspend this river-sharing treaty and also close the only land border crossing with Pakistan. Additionally, India will decrease the number of its defense staff in Pakistan from 55 to 30 and has ordered Pakistani defense advisers in India to leave within a week.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is holding a meeting with various political leaders to discuss the Pahalgam attack and India’s response. He has promised to bring justice to those responsible for this tragedy. Modi firmly stated that India would locate and punish every terrorist and their supporters, insisting that this action would continue until those guilty are held accountable.
