In New Delhi, retired Supreme Court Judge V Ramasubramanian shared important thoughts about our criminal justice system. He said people trust the criminal justice system more than the civil justice system. Ramasubramanian, who is now in charge of the National Human Rights Commission, spoke at the launch of a new criminal law database called ‘The State of the System’ by Vidhi Centre for Legal Policy.
He pointed out that many people in our society think of turning their civil problems into criminal ones. For example, when someone lends money and can’t get it back, they often want their lawyer to make it a criminal case so they can get their money back. Despite some problems, many people believe in the criminal justice system more than in civil justice.
Ramasubramanian also talked about how too many laws can make life harder for citizens, businesses, and the government. The new database tracks every crime defined by 370 Union laws from the past 174 years, covering 45 different topics. It aims to help citizens, researchers, and policymakers understand the laws better. It also shows where the punishments for crimes might not make sense and suggests better ideas for fixing and creating laws in the future.
