Severe Weather Alert: Cyclone Tam Impacts Auckland Harbour Bridge

The North Island is getting ready for some bad weather as Tropical Cyclone Tam moves closer. Even though the storm should weaken as it passes over cooler waters, it will still bring strong winds and heavy rain.

One area that might face big problems is the Auckland Harbour Bridge, which is crucial for city travel. The New Zealand Transport Agency (NZTA) is asking drivers to be very careful and watch out for possible road issues this week.

Starting today, April 16, winds on the bridge could reach 75-85 kilometers per hour. Because of this, an amber alert has been issued. This means drivers might have to go slower, and some lanes could be closed suddenly for safety.

The strong winds could last for about 40 hours, and things might get worse on Friday when winds are expected to be even stronger. A red alert may be issued if conditions get dangerous. This would mean closing all lanes of the Auckland Harbour Bridge to keep everyone safe.

Drivers in high-sided vehicles and motorcyclists are especially warned to stay away from the bridge. They should take the western ring route using State Highways 16 and 18 for a safer trip during these rough conditions.

During this storm, the Auckland Harbour Bridge will have a special 4×4 lane setup to make it more stable in the wind. The NZTA knows these changes might be inconvenient, but safety comes first. They appreciate everyone’s patience and will share updates about road closures and restrictions on their social media. Commuters and residents are encouraged to check these updates regularly to plan their trips safely.
