Dr. Mithal Receives Prestigious Award for Osteoporosis Research Achievements

A respected Indian doctor, Dr. Ambrish Mithal, just received a special award called the 2025 Committee of Scientific Advisors Medal of Achievement from the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF). This was announced on Friday and celebrated at an important event called the World Congress on Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis & Musculoskeletal Diseases in Rome, Italy.

This award recognizes people who have made significant contributions to the field of osteoporosis, a condition that makes bones weak. Dr. Mithal has helped many people understand and deal with osteoporosis better through his research and work.

Dr. Mithal is the head of endocrinology and diabetes at Max Healthcare in India, and he has been a member of the IOF’s Committee of Scientific Advisors for a long time. Professor Eugene McCloskey, who is the chair of this committee, praised Dr. Mithal for being a leader in endocrinology, especially in India.

Since 1996, Dr. Mithal has been the first in India to measure bone density and set up services for osteoporosis. He has been important in encouraging research about bone health in the region. He has also led projects that helped understand vitamin D levels around the world, which are important for bone health.

In 2015, Dr. Mithal was awarded the Padma Bhushan, one of India’s highest civilian awards, for his medical work.

“Osteoporosis is a condition many people in India don’t know much about. As our population ages, it’s becoming more common, and we need to be aware of it,” Dr. Mithal said. He feels honored to receive this award and hopes to keep raising awareness about osteoporosis and how to prevent it.
