Tragic Storms in Bihar and UP: 47 Lives Lost Amid Heavy Rain and Lightning

Tragedy struck Bihar and Uttar Pradesh on Thursday, as lightning and heavy rain caused the deaths of at least 47 people. News reports say that 25 people lost their lives in various parts of Bihar due to lightning and hail.

In Bihar, the worst-hit area was Nalanda, where 18 people died. Other districts like Siwan, Katihar, Darbhanga, and several others also reported fatalities. Just a day earlier, 13 people died from similar incidents in four Bihar districts.

Bihar’s Chief Minister, Nitish Kumar, expressed his sadness about the losses and announced that the families of those who died will receive ₹4 lakh (around $4,800) each as compensation.

Meanwhile, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav claimed that more than 50 people died from the storms and rain in Bihar, further expressing his condolences on a social media platform.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) is warning people in places like Darbhanga, East Champaran, and Patna about more heavy rain expected on Friday and Saturday.

In Uttar Pradesh, at least 22 people died across 15 districts because of rain, hail, and lightning. Fatehpur and Azamgarh each recorded three deaths. Other areas like Kanpur Dehat and Sitapur lost two lives each, and various other districts reported one death each due to lightning.

Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath directed officials to quickly give ₹4 lakh to each family of the deceased. He also asked for proper medical care for those injured and wanted a report on crop damage to assist those affected.
