Recently, Donald Trump poked fun at world leaders who are eager to strike trade deals with the U.S. He claimed, “These countries are calling us up, kissing my a,” suggesting they’re desperate to reach an agreement. At a fundraising event for House Republicans on April 8, Trump joked that these leaders were pleading with him, saying, “Please, please sir make a deal. I’ll do anything.”
He also criticized Republicans who want Congress to handle trade negotiations, emphasizing, “You don’t negotiate like I negotiate.”
Right after his comments, the White House revealed that tariffs on Chinese imports would jump to 104% starting April 9. An official explained this decision followed Trump’s warning of a 50% increase unless China removed its own tariffs on American products by Tuesday.
During the gala, Trump shared plans for new tariffs targeting the pharmaceutical industry. He stated, “We don’t make our own drugs; they come from other countries. The same medicine can cost ten times more here in the U.S. We’ll impose tariffs on pharma so companies will rush to set up shop here instead of China and other countries.” He believes that since the U.S. is a big market, companies will be eager to open their factories in the United States soon.
