The Jammu and Kashmir Assembly turned chaotic on Monday because of loud arguments and shouting after the Speaker, Abdul Rahim Rather, refused to allow a discussion on the Waqf (Amendment) Act. The National Conference (NC) wanted to talk about the law, saying it was important to their religion, but the Speaker said they couldn’t because the matter is in court.
Members of NC, Congress, and Independents wanted to hold a special discussion, but the Leader of the House from BJP, Sunil Sharma, disagreed, saying that the law is very important to their faith. This disagreement caused yelling, slogans, and even some members tearing up paper in protest.
As the situation escalated, NC and Congress members started shouting against the BJP while BJP members responded with their own slogans. The chaos reached a point where the Speaker had to adjourn the House for the day.
Outside the Assembly, members of NC, Congress, and CPI-M protested, saying that they should be allowed to speak about the issue, especially since the Tamil Nadu Assembly had passed a resolution about it. Some members argued that the bill threatens the idea of equality among different religions.
President Droupadi Murmu had recently approved the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2025, which had been debated in Parliament just days earlier.
