After US President Donald Trump announced a 26% tariff on some Indian goods, an official from India’s commerce ministry said the impact is “mixed” but not serious. The official, who wanted to stay unnamed, explained that starting April 5, a 10% tariff will apply to all imports into the US, followed by an additional 16% from April 10.
The official emphasized that this is not a major setback for India, as the commerce ministry is studying how this will affect trade. Trump has offered to lower these tariffs if India addresses his trade concerns.
Trump also shared that he considers Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi a “great friend,” but he believes that India is not treating the US fairly regarding trade. He pointed out that India charges very high tariffs – up to 52% – on US goods, which is why he decided on a 26% tariff for Indian products.
Meanwhile, the Indian government is working on a trade agreement with the US, targeting completion of the first phase by September or October of this year.
