Russian Woman Jailed for Encouraging War Crimes Against Ukrainians

A Russian woman named Olga Bykovskaya was sentenced to five years in prison because she urged her husband, a soldier, to harm Ukrainian women during the war. This decision was made by a court in Kyiv, Ukraine. The conflict between Ukraine and Russia began in February 2022, leading to a lot of destruction and many reported war crimes.

A Ukrainian security agency shared a recorded conversation where Olga told her husband to “use protection” while attacking Ukrainian women. This conversation showed that she supported his actions. Olga and her husband, Roman Bykovskaya, live in Crimea, which is currently controlled by Russia.

Olga was put on an international wanted list and charged with breaking war laws. The court officially found her guilty, and she must pay Ukraine over 15,000 hryvnias (about $362) for legal costs. Part of this amount covers a detailed examination of the recordings made public by the Ukrainian media.

Although Roman Bykovskaya claimed the voice in the recording wasn’t his, officials confirmed that the audio matched both their voices. Olga said she didn’t know where her husband was, as he was recovering from injuries in a hospital.
