Residents of Chennai woke up to some light rain on Thursday morning, bringing a welcome break from the heat. The sky will stay cloudy for the next few days. The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has informed the public to be aware of rain in certain districts.

The RMC predicts light thunderstorms and some lightning, along with moderate rainfall in isolated areas of Chennai and other northern districts. A yellow alert has been issued for districts near the hills, warning of possible heavy rain until Sunday.

A weather pattern in the Comorin area is expected to lead to widespread showers in these areas for the next five days. According to Senthamarai Kannan, Director of the Area Cyclone Warning Centre at the RMC, the weather over southern Tamil Nadu will bring light to moderate rain starting Thursday. Heavier rain is expected on Thursday in the Western Ghats, from Nilgiris to Tirunelveli and in parts of southern Tamil Nadu.

In contrast, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has announced it will not be an El Niño year during the upcoming monsoon but warns of an unusually hot summer ahead. Between April and June 2025, temperatures will be above normal, with more days having extreme heat. Many parts of India will experience this heatwave.

IMD Director General Mrutyunjay Mohapatra stated, “We don’t expect El Niño during the monsoon. But from April to June, it will be hotter than usual, affecting many states.” States like Rajasthan, Gujarat, Haryana, Punjab, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and northern Karnataka, along with Tamil Nadu, should prepare for more heatwave days.
