Marlins Edge Mets 4-2 as Alcantara Shines in Return

MIAMI — Sandy Alcantara had a strong comeback game, pitching five solid innings for his first win in 19 months. The Miami Marlins beat the New York Mets 4-2 on Tuesday night, even though they only got three hits in the game.

Alcantara, who missed last season because of Tommy John surgery, gave up two runs and four hits while striking out four batters. This was his first win since September 3, 2023. He didn’t get a decision in his first game of the season on March 27.

Graham Pauley was the star for the Marlins, hitting a two-run double in the fourth inning that put them ahead. Kyle Stowers also helped by hitting a home run.

Mets shortstop Francisco Lindor, who missed Monday’s game after the birth of his son, returned and got an RBI single. However, he also made two errors in the field.

Ronny Henriquez took over for Alcantara and threw two scoreless innings. Lake Bachar then pitched a perfect eighth inning. The Mets tried to make a comeback in the ninth inning when reliever Anthony Veneziano walked Juan Soto to start, but Anthony Bender came in and got the last two outs for his first save of the year.

Lindor ended an 0-for-12 slump with his RBI single in the third, tying the game at 2-2. The Marlins started strong against Mets pitcher Kodai Senga with Stowers’ two-run homer in the first inning. New York pulled closer when Brandon Nimmo hit another homer in the second. Senga gave up four runs, two of which were earned, on three hits over five innings while striking out eight and walking one.

In the fourth inning, Griffin Conine hustled to reach on a ground ball, avoiding an inning-ending double play. Pauley then hit a two-out double to left-center, scoring Jonah Bride and Conine.

With this win, the Marlins guaranteed a winning record for their homestand, having taken three out of four games against Pittsburgh.
