Lawyers in Kolkata are upset about the transfer of Justice Dinesh Kumar Sharma from the Delhi High Court to the Calcutta High Court. They have decided not to attend his swearing-in ceremony and may refuse to appear in any cases he judges. Justice Sharma was moved to Calcutta after a recommendation by the Supreme Court’s Collegium and the Union government.
Lawyer groups like the Bar Association, the Bar Library Club, and the Incorporated Law Society have sent a letter to the Chief Justice of the Calcutta High Court, asking not to give any work to Justice Sharma. They believe that his transfer is unusual and not in line with regular practices. They pointed out that Calcutta High Court, one of the oldest in the country, deserves judges with a strong reputation and longer experience.
In their letter, they said, “Even though judges are usually transferred, we think this specific move isn’t right.” They are planning other ways to protest their disagreement with Justice Sharma’s transfer, without disrupting other court activities. The lawyer groups also requested that the Additional Solicitor General and the Advocate General skip the swearing-in ceremony.
