Union Minister Kiren Rijiju brought the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024 to the Lok Sabha on Wednesday. This bill has become a topic of debate, especially with the opposition expressing their disagreement. During his speech, Rijiju explained why these changes are crucial. Here are the highlights from his address:
– “We have listened to many ideas from the Joint Parliamentary Committee and made important changes in this bill. We want to give hope—‘umeed’—to everyone. That’s why we named this new law UMEED, which stands for Unified Waqf Management, Empowerment, Efficiency, and Development Act.”
– “The discussions on the Waqf Amendment Bill have been significant, maybe the most thorough in our history. I want to thank everyone in the Joint Committee for their hard work.”
– “Many people from the Muslim community are excited about this bill. Some might disagree, but I want to invite them to my home to see how the Muslim community supports this bill. It will change your perspective.”
– “The government will not interfere with religious matters. The old Waqf law had issues; that’s why we needed to make updates. If anyone continues to share wrong information, we’ll bring in another bill to set the record straight. When Muslims set up a Waqf, we must ensure women in their families have rights too. This bill is about properties, not religion.”
