The Kerala High Court recently decided to allow the screening of a new Malayalam movie called L2: Empuraan, despite some controversy around it. The movie is said to criticize right-wing politics and had a petition filed by Vijeesh Vettam, a member of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). He wanted the court to stop the film from being shown in theaters because he claimed it showed an unfair image of the 2002 Gujarat riots and the central agencies.
However, Justice CS Dias from the court questioned Vettam’s motives, asking him if he had even watched the movie. The Judge reminded him that the film was approved by the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). “Where is the violence that this movie is causing? Have you seen a police complaint about it? This seems like more of a publicity stunt,” he said.
The judge dismissed Vettam’s request and decided to review the case later after the court’s vacation. Following this, the BJP party decided to suspend Vettam from their ranks, stating that the petition was his personal action and the party had no involvement.
In reaction, Vettam accepted his suspension but confirmed he will continue to pursue legal action regarding the film. This movie, which is the second part of the Lucifer trilogy, has sparked a lot of political debate since its release on March 27. Actor Mohanlal, who stars in the film, expressed regret over the controversy and mentioned that the filmmakers would remove any scenes that upset people.
