Tragic Explosion at Illegal Firecracker Factory in Gujarat
On Tuesday morning, a loud explosion shook a quiet neighborhood in Deesa, Gujarat, where a fire broke out at an illegal firecracker factory, killing at least 21 people. Girish Kotak, a local businessman, said it sounded like a plane crashed. People in the area ran away in fear as thick smoke and dust filled the air.

Authorities reported that the factory, hidden in a warehouse, did not have permission to manufacture firecrackers. Officials mentioned that the owner, Khubchand Thakkar, was known for illegally producing fireworks. Last year, police charged Thakkar’s son Deepak for betting crimes and now both were arrested after the explosion.

Preliminary investigations suggest the fire started from a boiler explosion, which then ignited the large stock of firecrackers inside. Police are looking into how this factory managed to operate secretly for so long. It was revealed that around 200 workers, many of whom were migrants, were employed there, and sadly, many of those who died had just arrived in Deesa for work.

Most of the deceased came from Madhya Pradesh, having recently lost their jobs at a firecracker factory after it exploded in February 2024. They took up this new job offer hoping for better opportunities. Rakesh Nayak, a survivor, shared his story about how he escaped to get water, while his family sadly lost their lives in the blast. The police are now reaching out to the families of the victims, confirming names and providing support.
