Raipur: A 41-year-old man named Durgesh Katholia died after being arrested by the police in Dhamtari, Chhattisgarh. He was caught for cheating about 50 farmers. They said he promised to pay them more money for their paddy but never did.
Katholia got very sick while in police custody. The police took him to the hospital, but doctors said he was already dead. Police think he might have had a heart attack, but they are waiting for a report to find out the exact cause of death.
Police have temporarily removed the local police station’s chief, Sunny Dubey, after Katholia’s death. An investigation has been ordered. Katholia’s family believes police mistreated him. His wife, Durga Devi, stated they didn’t know about his arrest or what happened in court. “If he did something wrong, he should have been punished by the law, not by the police,” she said during a protest outside the hospital where he lay.
Katholia’s father, Laxman, claimed the police hurt his son in front of him and didn’t let him drink water. “If they did this in front of us, what must have happened at the police station?” he questioned.
Congress party leaders joined the protest, demanding justice. They said, “A man died because of police brutality in Dhamtari. This shows a big problem in law and order,” said Sushil Anand Shukla, a leader from the Congress party, calling for a fair investigation.
